Here, in the third instalment of our Start-up Secrets series, Leah shares why her chalk and cheese relationship with Lord Sugar has been a success, and what she really thinks of the cosmetic industry.
I think for me it would be Eleanor Roosevelt for what she has achieved for women in general, and for what she did for social justice through her role in the UN. She was an incredible lady. And Karren Brady is the best businesswoman I know and has achieved so much for women in business, and also because of what Karren has achieved on a personal level. I would not change anything that I did. I think the key thing is to always believe in yourself – if you don’t back yourself no one else will.
I had fantastic support from family and lots of role models who instilled self-belief and without that it is very hard to reach your full potential. I’m delighted at where I have got to, it’s where I dreamt I would be. I won The Apprentice, which helped! The first time I pitched for funding was on The Apprentice and not only did I get the funding but I gained a fantastic business partner and mentor.

I think success in business is a lot to do with timing – you have to enter the right industry at the right time.
I predicted when I pitched the idea of Dr Leah Clinics on The Apprentice six years ago that there would be a gap in the market for a doctor-led clinic chain that was affordably priced and that the botox and dermal filler industry was about to boom- luckily this proved to be correct. My ambition was to come into the botox industry as a medical doctor and along with Lord Sugar establish a medical chain of cosmetic clinics which would set the standard for the whole industry- that is what we have done.
Fortunately my belief that there was a gap for a medical brand within this industry and that Botox and filler were about to become much more mainstream proved to be correct and Dr Leah Clinics have become a success. There is pressure on anyone who starts a business to make it work, but for me that pressure was higher than for most entrepreneurs due to the fact I had won The Apprentice, my business partner was Alan Sugar and the amount of press attention around the business most of which was at the time saying we were doomed to fail.

Q: What was your inspiration for this business Leah? I trained privately in aesthetics as soon as I qualified as a doctor. I realised quite soon into that training that actually, the industry was completely unregulated.
